Too many old and historic buildings are lost each year for want of a proper understanding of their history and significance.

Yet many of these buildings are sound structures for which new uses can be found.

Their continued presence in an urban or rural landscape helps to preserve links with an area's history and development, and their refurbishment has many advantages both in economic and ecological terms, being cost-effective when compared with new buildings and easing development pressure on the greenbelt and countryside.
